This note tells you how to install the software for the CPU upgrade, and then provides a pointer to the location of the hardware installation instructions. Install the software first, as described below.
The note contains the following information:
Depending on which version of IRIX is installed on your O2 workstation, you may need to install patches for the R5000 or R10000 CPU upgrade. To determine whether you need to install patches, check your workstation's IRIX version. In a shell window, enter
uname -R
If you see 6.5, you have the correct IRIX version. Do not install any patches.
If you see 6.3 O2 R10000, you need to install software patches from the CD included with this kit. Go to “Installing the Software Patches”.
If you see 6.3, you need to first upgrade your workstation to “IRIX 6.3 for O2 Including R10000” and then install the patches from the CD included with this kit. The “IRIX 6.3 for O2 Including R10000” software was mailed to all current O2 customers in December 1996.
![]() | Caution: If you are installing “IRIX 6.3 for O2 Including R10000” now, you must reboot the system before installing the patches CD, because the flash PROM environment variables may become corrupt. |
To install the patches on your workstation, follow these steps:
Insert the “IRIX 6.3 Recommend/Required Patches” CD in the CD-ROM drive and wait a few seconds until the CD-ROM icon on the desktop shows it is loaded. Then double-click the CD-ROM icon. If you have a root password set, you are prompted to enter it.
Read the Installation Startup Message that displays and click Dismiss.
Select /CDROM/dist/6.3_O2/ in the Software Manager window, and click Open.
Read the Installation Startup Script and click OK.
In the Software Manager window, click Start to begin auto installation.
When you are asked in the Open Additional Distribution window if you want to install additional software, click Done.
Follow the installation instructions displayed in Software Manager. When the installation is complete, choose File > Exit.
From the Toolchest, choose System > Restart System.
This section describes the documentation that contains the CPU upgrade installation information.
To install the CPU upgrade in your workstation, refer to the installation instructions in the O2 Workstation Owner's Guide (printed) that came with your O2 workstation, or the online O2 Hardware Reference Guide. The sections below describe how to locate the information.
In the hard-copy O2 Workstation Owner's Guide that came with your workstation, find the section “Replacing the R5000 CPU Module” or “Replacing the R10000 CPU Module,” (depending on your workstation) and follow the instructions.
If you installed IRIX 6.3 for O2 Including R10000, the O2 Workstation Hardware Reference Guide was installed by default on your system disk. See “Viewing the Book From the IRIS
