This flier provides information for removing and installing the DIMM bracket on the system module in the Octane workstation.
The instructions in this flier are supplemental to the instructions found in the Silicon Graphics Octane Workstation Owner's Guide. Follow the instructions in the owner's guide to power off the system, attach the wrist strap, and remove the system module. Begin following these instructions as soon as the system module is removed.
Your system may have a bracket already installed, or you may be installing one as part of the DIMM upgrade or in preparation for moving your system:
To install a bracket, first install any DIMM upgrade, then go to “Installing the DIMM Bracket”.
To remove a bracket that is already installed in the system, go to “Removing the Bracket”.
After installing or removing DIMMs, or when preparing a system for moving or shipping, install the DIMM bracket.
Open your system and remove the system module as explained in the system's owner's guide.
Turn the system module so that the DIMMs are accessible, as shown in Figure 1.
Place the bracket fingers into the fins on the heatsink, and the prongs beneath the heatsink. Slide the bracket toward the heatsink, as shown in Figure 1.
Using your thumbs, press on the free bracket end causing the bracket to bow slightly as you attach the bracket to the rail. See Figure 2.
![]() | Caution: The foam pads on the underside of the bracket are necessary to hold the DIMMs in place. Be careful not to push the DIMMs sideways, because too much sideways tilt damages the foam pads. |
The DIMM bracket must be removed before DIMMs are installed or removed. The DIMM bracket does not need to be removed for normal operation. For eample, after moving or shipping a system, you do not need to remove the brackets.
Open your system and remove the system module as explained in the system's owner's guide.
Turn the system module so the DIMMs are accessible, as shown in Figure 3.
Remove the bracket from the rail by pushing it toward the heatsink. Use your thumbs to press on the free end of the bracket causing the bracket to bow slightly upward as you detach the bracket from the rail. See Figure 2.
Slide the bracket off the heatsink. See Figure 3.
Follow the instructions in the owner's guide to remove or install DIMMs, then return to this flier for instructions on installing the bracket.
