The guide provides an overview of the specific features of the serial connectors and the audio capabilities of the Audio/Serial Option. It also contains block diagrams of the board and connector pinouts. Serial documentation includes: corrensponce of serial ports to /dev device entries, setting baud rates, differences between these and existing Challenge and Onyx serial ports, and basic information on writing applications to use the serial ports. Audio documentation includes: changing sampling rates, setting 2-channel and 4-channel modes, audio-connector size limitations, and audio system specifications (standards, impedences, voltage levels, distortion, frequency response, and so forth.) This guide was not intended to be a complete description of using audio ports and serial ports on Silicon Graphics systems. Rather, it concentrates on the specifics of the Audio/Serial Option and provides references to other documents.
